BUCHAREST, October 24th -- The SECI Center management welcomed on Tuesday the Secretary General of ASEAN (the Association of South-East Asia Nations), H.E. Mr. Ong Keng Yong.
The SECI Center Director, Mr. Mitja Mocnik underlined the uniqueness of this regional organization: "
The most important aspect of the work here, at SECICenter, is police and customs officers from all the countries in the region working together to combat trans-border crime and networks."
H.E. Ong Keng Yong congratulated the SECI Center management for this
initiative: "
Today organized groups have become substantial bodies and if we use traditional fight we are not successful. The way to respond to organized crime is a multilateral effort. This regional and sub-regional cooperation is critical."
One model of cooperation with effective results was expressed by the Deputy Director, Mr. Gabriel Sotirescu:
"Due to legislative measures taken by the countries in the area and to the existence of the SECICenter, the level of stolen vehicles phenomenon decreased. The networks moved further to East."
The ASEAN General Secretary presented the structures for combating criminality existing in the region he represents and stressed out the importance of future collaboration between these organizations and the SECI Center.
