The Customs Administration in South East Europe (SEE) joint their efforts in fighting terrorism
Bucharest, 2 May 2007- -The 2nd Meeting of the SECI Center Container Security Task Force (CSTF) took place in Bucharest on 26-27 April 2007.
Experts of the Customs Administrations from the twelve SECI Member Countries, six Observer Countries - Azerbaijan, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, UK and Ukraine - and European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) attended the meeting.
Taking into consideration that the containerized shipments represent 90% of the global trade (over 200 millions tons per year only by sea), there are high risk to use by the terrorist networks the containers for concealing and forwarding their illicit cargos such as Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), CBRN, Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and explosive materials which could be used for terrorist attacks, threatening any nation’s security.
Due to its impact, the issues of Container Security became more important on the international trade and on the security and safety of the countries. This issue is also directly related with the fight against the proliferation of the WMD and international terrorism.
In this respect, the new role of the Customs Administrations in fighting terrorism enhanced in the last years and their active involvement in this continuous fight was confirmed once again these days when the countries of the region joint their efforts to find better ways for combating this phenomenon.
The participants to the event agreed that the SEE Region has to offer a better environment for international trade and the SECI Center Member and Observer Countries expressed their commitment and permanent concern for creating such secure trade environment.
