7-th Meeting of the Southeast European Prosecutors Advisory Group (SEEPAG)

Bucharest, 10 November 2006 - - Enhancing cooperation between the Offices of the General Prosecutors has been discussed in Bucharest at the highest level at the Seventh Meeting of the South East Europe Prosecutors Advisory Group (SEEPAG) which took place at the SECI Center Headquarters on 9-10 November.

The SEEPAG is an international organization of prosecutors formed by the countries of the South East Europe (SEE) region with an express intention of facilitating cooperation in significant trans-border crime investigations and cases. This initiative recognizes that as trans-border crime transcends national borders, the strategy for combating it must have regional as well as national dimension. By improving upon the available facilities for mutual legal assistance, the SEEPAG seeks to significantly increase the capacity of individual states to suppress, investigate and prosecute serious trans-border crimes.

Member States of SEEPAG are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey.

General Prosecutor of Romania, Mrs. Laura Codruta Kovesi and the Chairman of the SEEPAG, Mr. Mirko Vrtacnik, Deputy General Prosecutor of Slovenian, together with other high level representatives from SEE participated and addressed the event.

The participants at the gathering approved the Minutes of the previous SEEPAG Meeting and discussed a series of important and challenging topics related to the legal relationship between the SEEPAG countries. Among other issues they agreed to increase the common efforts on cooperation within the frame of fighting against organized crime in the region.

The agenda included exchange of best practices on witness protection activities and an examination of the legal relationship between prosecutors and police in the member countries.

Thanks to the financial support of the US Government, the using of the newly installed video teleconference equipment was demonstrated by a first video bridge between the SECI Center and Office of the General Prosecutor of a Member State. Once completed, this video conferencing networking will link all member countries and it will be the first video teleconferencing network to link law enforcement in the world.
