32 human traffickers arrested in Italy and Romania
An investigation conducted by Romanian and Italian authorities and supported by the SECI Center resulted in the apprehension of 32 Albanian and Romanian human traffickers. The arrests took place in both Italy and Romania.
Romanian police officers from the Bacau Brigade for Fighting Organized Crime started an inquiry regarding a human trafficking network over a year ago. The offenders were recruiting young women from the Bacau area and transporting them into Italy, where they were directly forced into prostitution or resold to other Romanian or Albanian nationals for the same purpose. The amount of money paid for a victim varied from 2,000 to 4,000 Euros.
The SECI Center was requested to support the cooperation with the Italian authorities from Torino. In March 2006, a common operation was conducted in both countries. As a result of this operation, code-named “Torino”, two significant members of this criminal network were caught in the act of transporting two victims across the border, at the Varsand border check point (Arad county - Romania).
Based on intelligence sharing facilitated by the SECI Center, further arrests occurred in both countries. At the end of the operation “Torino” 8 traffickers were arrested in Romania and other 24 in Italy.
